Week 12

This week I listened to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". This is the "edgy" song of our youth as I would say. This song is one that not many of us know exactly what the lyrics are or what it means; but we all sure do love it. Whenever this song comes on it gives me a little bit of energy. The song is actually named after a deodorant called Teen Spirit. The song was also written to resemble the style of the band The Pixies, who is a band that front man of Nirvana greatly admired. This song was Nirvana's biggest hit and one that truly put them more known by mainstream culture. This song is known as the anthem of Generation X who is the generation of people after baby boomers. This generation is known for having troubles with self identity being after baby boomers and before millennials, this was a song that would speak to them. This is due to the song also looked at as breaking norms from groups before it just like how Gen X would with their parents. Kurt...

This week I listened to Led Zeppelin's " Stairway To Heaven" , which is a song that I truly love. I have older parents so songs and music like this I would listen to a lot when I was younger. It is a very long song rounding off at around 8 minutes, but if you are on a road trip, this song is a great one to pass the time. The way the guitar is played in this song is so iconic and one I feel like many people who play the guitar love to play. This song is very slow and melodic and seems like almost a sad song. But doing some research, the song is more about solidarity and brotherhood. I have and always will love listening to this song and just the good times and places I've gone while listening to this song. There is a conspiracy that the song when played backwards, the song is a message that worships the devil. But I believe that is only said because of how popular the song is and how often its played throughout its life span that people try and think of crazy things a...

Week 8

This week I listened to "Summertime"  by Janis Joplin. This was the first time to my recollection that I have ever heard this song and I must say I am not disappointed. I'm not typically a fan of rock music, though I can appreciate it every once and a while, but this song does honestly make me question why I don't listen to it more. The use of the guitar in this song is superb, and the drums in the back is nice and subtle to where you know its there but it doesn't distract from the guitar or Janis' voice. Her voice is an amazing raspy sound and what really amazed me is how she hits higher notes while still in the raspier voice that she has. Between each verse, they seem to almost let the guitarist loose and play how they want, and it sounds so incredible. The guitar parts of the song really bring it all together and set the whole mood of the song. Its almost melodic and puts you in a trance that feels like time has just stopped and you're just in the mome...

Week 7

This week I listened to " Fun, Fun Fun" by The Beach Boys. The song starts out very fast tempo and, to me, gives an instant feeling of fun and joy. The song is perfectly titled as this song just screams fun. Along with the name of the band as I feel like this song is perfect for a 60's or 70's style movie set on a beach. This song gives me a feeling to just want to go out to the beach with friends and drive up and down the coast in a convertible. I feel like that was definitely the intention of the song. Though looking at the lyrics it was mainly just about a girl who took her fathers car for a joyride and is having a great time until her father takes it back. Despite that being the lyrics it is still an enjoyable song and one anyone can listen to in a car ride, especially with friends and just cruise. Definitely a short song but one that last beyond even its own time.

Week 6

This week I decided to listen to the King of Rock himself, Elvis Presley. The song of his that I listened to was " Hound Dog"  which is arguably one of his most famous songs. It is a very high tempo and upbeat song and just fun to listen to. Though if you listen to the lyrics, it is kind of a weird to think about this song being so upbeat. A hound dog is slang for a man who pursues a women without success continuously, it can also mean simply a dog that is used for hunting purposes. Despite the meaning of the lyrics it is still a fun song and one that was used to party. Elvis is very much known for this kind of music and this song is just a taste of what his other songs are like. Unfortunately though, through time it was discovered that there is a high chance that he stole this song from a black artist named Big Mama Thornton and never gave her credit for the song. Sadly it will continue to go down in history and be known as one of Elvis' greatest hits, and there is no w...

Week 5

This week I listened to Nat "King" Cole's " Nature Boy".  This was a very calming and melodic song and to me was very soothing. You are first greeted by Cole playing the piano and stops for a second to start his singing. Personally I think he has an incredible voice and to sing in such a slow tempo as he does is amazing. The song has very few words stretched through the 3 minutes but gave a powerful message. The song talked about a boy who traveled many places whos message simply was "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return." It is a powerful message that even going around the entire globe, traveling and gaining knowledge, the greatest thing to learn is to just love and be loved. The songs instrumentals are Nat Cole on piano accompanied by a guitar and cello I believe. It is a beautiful song sung even more beautifully by Cole, this is something I could see at the end of a film of romance and deception.
