Week 8




 This week I listened to "Summertime" by Janis Joplin. This was the first time to my recollection that I have ever heard this song and I must say I am not disappointed. I'm not typically a fan of rock music, though I can appreciate it every once and a while, but this song does honestly make me question why I don't listen to it more. The use of the guitar in this song is superb, and the drums in the back is nice and subtle to where you know its there but it doesn't distract from the guitar or Janis' voice. Her voice is an amazing raspy sound and what really amazed me is how she hits higher notes while still in the raspier voice that she has. Between each verse, they seem to almost let the guitarist loose and play how they want, and it sounds so incredible. The guitar parts of the song really bring it all together and set the whole mood of the song. Its almost melodic and puts you in a trance that feels like time has just stopped and you're just in the moment. Then when Janis comes back it almost breaks you out of that trance back into reality and puts the focus on her again. This song would also end up being the last one she would sing at her last concert before her death. I would find a performance of this song as a great way to go out. Janis is known as the "Goddess of Rock" and to me this song proves why she earned that title. I would say there aren't many women in music that can replicate her voice and how she projects it. I may be 50 years too late to finding this song, but I'm glad I did.

 This week I decided to listen to the King of Rock himself, Elvis Presley. The song of his that I listened to was " Hound Dog"  which is arguably one of his most famous songs. It is a very high tempo and upbeat song and just fun to listen to. Though if you listen to the lyrics, it is kind of a weird to think about this song being so upbeat. A hound dog is slang for a man who pursues a women without success continuously, it can also mean simply a dog that is used for hunting purposes. Despite the meaning of the lyrics it is still a fun song and one that was used to party. Elvis is very much known for this kind of music and this song is just a taste of what his other songs are like. Unfortunately though, through time it was discovered that there is a high chance that he stole this song from a black artist named Big Mama Thornton and never gave her credit for the song.  This week I listened to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". This is the "edgy" song of our youth as I would say. This song is one that not many of us know exactly what the lyrics are or what it means; but we all sure do love it. Whenever this song comes on it gives me a little bit of energy. The song is actually named after a deodorant called Teen Spirit. The song was also written to resemble the style of the band The Pixies, who is a band that front man of Nirvana greatly admired. This song was Nirvana's biggest hit and one that truly put them more known by mainstream culture. This song is known as the anthem of Generation X who is the generation of people after baby boomers. This generation is known for having troubles with self identity being after baby boomers and before millennials, this was a song that would speak to them.  I listened to the Switched on Pop episode called Song of Summer 2020. In this episode they talked made a competition to decide what song is their Song of the Summer. They have 4 rounds each round having 3 songs. The first round is TikTok Jams and the winner of that round was "Savage Remix" with Megan Thee Stallion ft. Beyoncé. The second round is Protest Anthems and the winner of this round is Beyoncé's "Black Parade" . The third round is called Breezy Bops and the winner is Chloe x Halle's "Do It".
