Week 7

This week I listened to " Fun, Fun Fun" by The Beach Boys. The song starts out very fast tempo and, to me, gives an instant feeling of fun and joy. The song is perfectly titled as this song just screams fun. Along with the name of the band as I feel like this song is perfect for a 60's or 70's style movie set on a beach. This song gives me a feeling to just want to go out to the beach with friends and drive up and down the coast in a convertible. I feel like that was definitely the intention of the song. Though looking at the lyrics it was mainly just about a girl who took her fathers car for a joyride and is having a great time until her father takes it back. Despite that being the lyrics it is still an enjoyable song and one anyone can listen to in a car ride, especially with friends and just cruise. Definitely a short song but one that last beyond even its own time.

Week 6

This week I decided to listen to the King of Rock himself, Elvis Presley. The song of his that I listened to was " Hound Dog"  which is arguably one of his most famous songs. It is a very high tempo and upbeat song and just fun to listen to. Though if you listen to the lyrics, it is kind of a weird to think about this song being so upbeat. A hound dog is slang for a man who pursues a women without success continuously, it can also mean simply a dog that is used for hunting purposes. Despite the meaning of the lyrics it is still a fun song and one that was used to party. Elvis is very much known for this kind of music and this song is just a taste of what his other songs are like. Unfortunately though, through time it was discovered that there is a high chance that he stole this song from a black artist named Big Mama Thornton and never gave her credit for the song. Sadly it will continue to go down in history and be known as one of Elvis' greatest hits, and there is no w...

Week 5

This week I listened to Nat "King" Cole's " Nature Boy".  This was a very calming and melodic song and to me was very soothing. You are first greeted by Cole playing the piano and stops for a second to start his singing. Personally I think he has an incredible voice and to sing in such a slow tempo as he does is amazing. The song has very few words stretched through the 3 minutes but gave a powerful message. The song talked about a boy who traveled many places whos message simply was "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return." It is a powerful message that even going around the entire globe, traveling and gaining knowledge, the greatest thing to learn is to just love and be loved. The songs instrumentals are Nat Cole on piano accompanied by a guitar and cello I believe. It is a beautiful song sung even more beautifully by Cole, this is something I could see at the end of a film of romance and deception.

Week 4

This week I listened to Duke Ellington's "Caravan"  which was made in 1936. This song has a plethora of instruments and it is really hard to focus on just one. As I try and and pick out one, it seems to fade away and another instrument is being highlighted. It is almost confusing and jarring trying to listen to. It also starts out somewhat slower and as the song continues to play it almost feel to be getting faster and louder the longer it goes. The song seems to play more instruments together like he is trying to experiment what different instruments work together and in what rhythm and style. This song makes me think of a packed club in the 1930's or even in a movie based around a detective. Either way the song is quite fun to listen to and feels like a game to try and figure out what instruments are being played. The best way I would describe it is like one of those old I Spy books.
