Listening Blog Week 3

 This week I decided to listen to Gene Austin's "My Blue Heaven". Though Austin didn't write the music or lyrics to this song, and was not the only person to sing it, he is the one who made it popular. With this song he sold 5 million copies of the song and was the number one hit for 13 weeks. This is a very beautiful and calming song. The imagery in the song is amazing and you can really picture yourself coming home to your spouse and child, while leaving everything that happened outside the house at the door. Call me old but this is a image that I hope to one day be able to have. It makes sense that this song was so popular in the late 1920's. This song was made and popular roughly at the start of The Great Depression and was a time when many people would work tirelessly for days on end and the only joy they would be able to have was to come home to their loving spouse and child. Listening Blog Week 2

 This week I decided to listen to, and talk about is Joe "King" Oliver's, "Dipper Mouth Blues".  This song to me has just an iconic sound and is the music that first come to my head when I think of the 1920's. The 1920's is my personal favorite decade in history and it makes sense that I enjoy the type of music that was enjoyed during that time as well. This song has a upbeat tempo that I can see being used in almost all walks of life. I can see it played in movies, clubs, the standard household living room, etc. It evokes just a happy feeling almost to the point of just wanting to get up and dance. I am also a fan of music without words as I feel like music without any words can evoke the greatest emotion in people and I feel like this song supports my claim. I feel like this song can be attributed as a product of where Joe Oliver grew up which was New Orleans, Louisiana; which is pretty known for its upbeat jazz music.
