Listening Blog Week 3

This week I decided to listen to Gene Austin's "My Blue Heaven". Though Austin didn't write the music or lyrics to this song, and was not the only person to sing it, he is the one who made it popular. With this song he sold 5 million copies of the song and was the number one hit for 13 weeks. This is a very beautiful and calming song. The imagery in the song is amazing and you can really picture yourself coming home to your spouse and child, while leaving everything that happened outside the house at the door. Call me old but this is a image that I hope to one day be able to have. It makes sense that this song was so popular in the late 1920's. This song was made and popular roughly at the start of The Great Depression and was a time when many people would work tirelessly for days on end and the only joy they would be able to have was to come home to their loving spouse and child. The home was special at this time, it was their sanctuary from what was happening on the streets and at their work. This song has a very special meaning and can still apply to many to this day, especially for those who work hard manual labor jobs. It is another way of saying, don't work where you sleep. I like to think this song truly made people happy to come home and brought families closer together during what was such a hard time in history.
