Listening Blog Week 2
This week I decided to listen to, and talk about is Joe "King" Oliver's, "Dipper Mouth Blues". This song to me has just an iconic sound and is the music that first come to my head when I think of the 1920's. The 1920's is my personal favorite decade in history and it makes sense that I enjoy the type of music that was enjoyed during that time as well. This song has a upbeat tempo that I can see being used in almost all walks of life. I can see it played in movies, clubs, the standard household living room, etc. It evokes just a happy feeling almost to the point of just wanting to get up and dance. I am also a fan of music without words as I feel like music without any words can evoke the greatest emotion in people and I feel like this song supports my claim. I feel like this song can be attributed as a product of where Joe Oliver grew up which was New Orleans, Louisiana; which is pretty known for its upbeat jazz music. Joe Oliver was known as the King of Jazz and was a pioneer of the genre. He was the mentor and teacher of Louis Armstrong who said that "if it had not been for Joe Oliver, Jazz would not be what it is today." Now after listening to some of his music, I feel like Joe Oliver truly is the king.
I like what you said about being able to see this song played during all aspects of life. I agree, it totally reminds me of those old black and white movies where the audio is muted and there's jazz music playing in the background. I also can see what you're saying about the 1920s. The happy mood to the song screams "I'm having a good time" just like the roaring 20s does.
