Week 4

This week I listened to Duke Ellington's "Caravan" which was made in 1936. This song has a plethora of instruments and it is really hard to focus on just one. As I try and and pick out one, it seems to fade away and another instrument is being highlighted. It is almost confusing and jarring trying to listen to. It also starts out somewhat slower and as the song continues to play it almost feel to be getting faster and louder the longer it goes. The song seems to play more instruments together like he is trying to experiment what different instruments work together and in what rhythm and style. This song makes me think of a packed club in the 1930's or even in a movie based around a detective. Either way the song is quite fun to listen to and feels like a game to try and figure out what instruments
are being played. The best way I would describe it is like one of those old I Spy books.

  1. I love how you attached a picture from one of the ispy books haha. I critically listened to this song as well and got a similar vibe where it was kind of a lot of instruments all at once. I can see why Duke Ellington was such a popular artist back in the day but I wonder where he would sit in todays world.
