Week 12
This week I listened to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". This is the "edgy" song of our youth as I would say. This song is one that not many of us know exactly what the lyrics are or what it means; but we all sure do love it. Whenever this song comes on it gives me a little bit of energy. The song is actually named after a deodorant called Teen Spirit. The song was also written to resemble the style of the band The Pixies, who is a band that front man of Nirvana greatly admired. This song was Nirvana's biggest hit and one that truly put them more known by mainstream culture. This song is known as the anthem of Generation X who is the generation of people after baby boomers. This generation is known for having troubles with self identity being after baby boomers and before millennials, this was a song that would speak to them. This is due to the song also looked at as breaking norms from groups before it just like how Gen X would with their parents. Kurt Cobain who is the main singer of the song actually hated the song and what become of it. Cobain never wanted to sing in the first place and it became a popular song and brought a lot of attention which Cobain never wanted. Cobain never even took the song seriously.
I agree that although not many of us know the meaning behind the song, we all like it or at least know it. I didn't know that Kurt Cobain didn't like the song so that's pretty interesting to me with it being probably their most popular song. Overall, this is an iconic song and has a nostalgia factor for me too.
